All I can say in my defense on this subject is that (ELEVEN YEARS AGO,
remember—I don't commit them all to memory, guys) Professor Phil Morrison up
at Harvard (cool, very smart little guy) said this chapter was the best
description of a nuclear detonation he'd ever read. (If it were that far off,
Mr. McCall would probably have attacked me years ago.) I am responsible for the
words, but not, of course, the science. I've never claimed to be any sort of
physicist.

I am pleased with how the movie is going along, and not surprised by the
reaction here to it. Damn, and people say I am doctrinaire!

"Executive Producer" is a title singularly without meaning, I didn't spend a
single day on the set. Nobody here as noticed that there is no Baltimore
General Hospital. Hollywood hasn't heard about Johns Hopkins yet. That offends
me. I just bought a chair for the medical school there.

But, amazingly, I spent the day after the premiere with the director, Phil
Robinson, taping a full-length-of-the-movie commentary on the movie. It's
supposed to go onto the DVD as a secondary option, with Phil and me doing a
running commentary rather like Science Theater 3000 on the Sci Fi channel. I
think it might actually be rather funny, as I was, shall I say, candid in my
observations. Full marks to Phil Robinson for having the guts and integrity to
do such a thing.

Future projects in development: Rainbow 6 and Without Remorse. I expect to see
scripts soon.

As an example of the fan mail I often get, I offer the following:

HIM: One question remains. How much does the CIA/ DIA pay you to keep their PR
clean? Be serious those intel pukes are as dirty as a honey wagon.

No opuim in their history eh? No Gen Win in Burma massacering his own people.

Even John Kelly would quit in disgust, but he already did.

MY REPLY: You bet, ever since I helped shoot Kennedy.

People do have their own ideas. (And, hell, it was an easy shot, only 65
yards…)

What else? Still hammering away on Red Rabbit. Whoever it was who said it would
not be out in August, do us all a favor, and change bars. Clancy always
delivers.

Dear God, you people are verbose. And you say *I* need an editor. Had you guys
done Red October we'd have had a lengthy discussion of the hole at the North
Pole leading to the Inner Earth that Admiral Byrd discovered back in 1936. The
real home of UFOs, and where Elvis went—then a further discourse on
abortion—then how his sister escaped over the coinvent wall and became a
hooker on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, before going straight and becoming a local
TV anchor. (I mean, when you get down to it, what's the difference?)

Oh, I probably won't get this year's Pulitzer Price for fiction—again. I'm
rooting for Dan Rather. He just doesn't get the respect he deserves.

What am I doing up at midnight when I have a book to finish?
