The SOund SUrveillance System, or SOSUS, is
part of the U.S. Navy's Integrated Undersea Surveillance
Systems (IUSS) network used for deep ocean surveillance. Installation
of SOSUS was begun in the mid-1950's by the U.S. Navy for
use in antisubmarine warfare. SOSUS includes bottom
mounted hydrophone arrays which are connected by undersea
communication cables to monitoring stations on shore. The
arrays themselves are usually installed primarily on continental
slopes and seamounts at locations considered to be optimized
for undistorted long range acoustic propagation (i.e. how
far the sound travels). One SOSUS facility is: Pt.
Sur, CA. For more information: http://newport.pmel.noaa.gov/geophysics/sosus_system.html (A
really good reference - thanks Lee Retterer). |

The Sovremenny class destroyers have an all
around capability serving in the anti-ship, anti-aircraft,
anti-submarine and coastal bombardment roles. The ship is
about the same size as the U.S. Navy's Aegis missile cruisers. The
ship has an anti-submarine helicopter, 48 air defense missiles,
8 anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, mines, long range guns and
a comprehensive electronic warfare system. The first Sovremenny
was commissioned in 1985. A total of sixteen have been built
for the Russian Navy , eleven of which are in service, six
are no longer operational and one more (launched in 1994)
is awaiting commissioning. Two further ships are reported
to have been ordered by China and have not yet been launched.
All ships were built at the Northern Yard in Saint Petersburg,
formerly called the Zhadanov Yard. For additional information: Sovremenny
Class Destroyers. |
Spruance Class Destroyers
|
The Spruance class destroyers were the first
large U.S. Navy warships to employ gas turbine engines as
their main propulsion system. These destroyers have
undergone extensive upgrade programs including the addition
of vertical launchers for Tomahawk missiles on 24 ships of
this class. In addition, the ASW system has been upgraded
along with advancement to LAMPS III helicopter capability. USS
Spruance (DD-963) and USS Caron (DD-970) are Spruance class
destroyers. For additional information: U.S.
Navy Destroyers. |

Still the fastest and highest flying known
production aircraft in the World, the SR-71 flies at the
announced speed of 3.2 mach at an altitude of over 85,000
feet. Two are still in use by NASA as testbeds with
others remaining in various forms of storage by the USAF. For
