Tom Clancy FAQ - SSN
SSN was published in 1996 and included
both a computer game and a companion book. Both the book and
the game have been widely criticized for inaccuracies but, in general,
they
provide
the armchair submarine Captain with an enjoyable diversion. The
game package includes two CD's of which one is the game and the
second is an interview of Mr. Clancy and Captain Doug Littlejohns
(Royal
Navy retired) conducted in the "Greek Island", a cold war
Congressional retreat that was only recently revealed to the public. The
interview includes comments by Clancy and Littlejohns which indicates
that the game concept was established by Littlejohns. He wanted
a game that took the player out of the submarine itself and into
the water so that the player could see the underwater environment. From
that standpoint, the game is certainly unusual but lacks many of
the technical details present in games like Electronic
Arts' Janes Combat Simulations 688i Hunter/Killer.
SSN was published by Simon and Schuster Interactive before the formation
of Red Storm Entertainment by Clancy and Littlejohns.
