Tom Clancy FAQ - Movies
The following sections deal mainly with the movies made from
the books written by Tom Clancy. While there will be inevitable
references to the books, the book chapter will contain more
information on them. For more information and details refer to

Questions & Answers
M1 -- Do the movies take place in the same order as the
books?
No. The movies do NOT
take place in the same order as the books. The following is the
order in which the books/movies take place/were published:
Books Published Book timeline Movie timeline
--------------- ------------- --------------
Hunt for Red Oct. Patriot Games Sum of All Fears
Patriot Games Hunt for Red October Hunt for Red Oct.
Clear & Pres. Dngr. Clear & Pres. Dngr. Patriot Games
Sum of All Fears Sum of All Fears Clear & Pres. Dngr
There has been no comment from the movie folks as to why they
altered the book timeline. [Did you expect one?] The most likely
guess is that since Patriot Games was released after The Hunt
for Red October, the producers felt that changing the timeline
for the movie(s) would produce less confusion for the movie
going public. An additional consideration could be that
Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan in Patriot Games appears older than
Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October. So
placing Patriot Games' timeline *after* The Hunt for Red October
made more sense for the movie. Similarly, Ben Affleck is
younger than either Ford or Baldwin. On the other hand, with
Hollywood, who knows?

M2 -- Why did the Jack Ryan actors change?
Why does Harrison Ford play Jack Ryan in Patriot Games and
Clear and Present Danger when Alec Baldwin did so well in The
Hunt for Red October? Why is Ben Affleck now Jack Ryan?
The Hunt for Red October was filmed and released first. It
was a single movie deal. After its success Hollywood wanted to
make more. By the time that the movies were being cast, Alec
Baldwin already had several other contractual engagements. He
was starring in a Broadway play when shooting was to start. He
reportedly wanted to be in Patriot Games but couldn't move his
schedule around. So Harrison Ford was selected as an as close as
possible replacement. Of course, we can speculate that Hollywood
also wanted a big name star in the lineup as well. By Hollywood
logic, Sean Connery was probably more important as a big name
draw for The Hunt for Red October than as an actor in it. The
Patriot Games / Clear and Present Danger movie deal was
reportedly a three movie contract. Now we see Ben Affleck?
Why? I have no definitive word about any of that. Read
Variety.

M3 -- Why does Hollywood mess up Clancy's stories? Why do
they have to rewrite them? (Why did they kill Murray?)
There are several reasons.
First and foremost. Trying to fit one of Tom Clancy's wide
ranging and detailed stories into a 2 hour movie is a nearly
impossible undertaking. Anything but the main plot is subject to
axing. Things in the main plot that won't film well or easily
also get axed or altered. Hollywood has discovered that people
will not sit through movies of much greater duration than 2 to 2
1/2 hours. So they won't come. Movie theaters, that Hollywood
depends on, absolutely hate intermissions. They are dead time
where the theater makes some money from concessions, but not
much. Four intermissions in one day can add up to an additional
showing of the film, and consequently, more money.
Second. Hollywood isn't in the business of charitably
bringing authors' works to the screen. They're in it for the
money. Hollywood has found that certain formulae generate more
viewers, and thus, more money. Add these formulae to a movie and
n% more money flows into the coffers. If an authors' story
doesn't have these formulae, they're added.
Third, that's Hollywood!

M4 -- Where did Jack Ryan go to college? What's going on
here?
In the Jack Ryan entry in the Characters section in The Books
chapter it doesn't show Ryan attending Annapolis. I distinctly
remember the Admiral in The Hunt for Red October implying that
Jack Ryan graduated from the Academy. Where did Jack Ryan go to
college?
Hollywood strikes again! In the book storyline, Jack Ryan
attended Boston College and Georgetown University. The movie
changed this when Captain Davenport complains about Ryan wearing
the uniform of a Naval Commander when he doesn't deserve it.
Admiral Painter replies that Davenport should notice the ring
Ryan is wearing. He goes on to give an account of how Ryan
completed his fourth Academy year from a hospital bed after a
horrible helicopter crash. This scene is *not* in the book. It
was added by Hollywood!
If you're talking movie storyline, Ryan attended the US Naval
Academy at Annapolis. If you're talking book storyline, he
didn't.

M5 -- Is Without Remorse being made into a movie?
I have heard that Tom Clancy is making Without Remorse into a
movie and that Keanu Reeves will play John Clark. Is this true?
What's happening with the movie version of Without Remorse?
There have been rumors, speculations, and guesses all over.
Some of them probably from various discussions in this
newsgroup. There have also been various reports in the media
about Without Remorse, The Movie. Tom Clancy has stated that he
is the executive producer of the movie version of Without
Remorse. It is to be produced by Savoy Pictures. No actor has
been offered ANY part in the film. Some informal discussions
have occurred with several actors. Anything you have seen,
heard, or read in the media beyond this information is pure
speculation. There have been no announcements, because there is
nothing to announce, as yet. This as of: 30 Nov 1994.
Jason Woerner
offers the following:
I got a response from the webmaster at a movie site (Pretty
Cool...specializes on upcoming movies, release dates and links).
Here is his message:
"WITHOUT REMORSE was being developed by Savoy pictures, which
went out of business in 1996. Since then, the property has been
shopped around, but nothing significant has happened. It is not
in development at the moment and doesn't look to be in the near
future."

M6 -- Why isn't Op-Center (the book) the same as the
miniseries?
I read the book Op-Center and saw the mini-series. The two
didn't even have the same story line. One was a conflict in
Korea. And the movie was about missing warheads in the Soviet
Union. (Russia). What's going on?
The book is a take-off on the miniseries. They have nothing
but the name in common. Just that simple.
M7 -- What is the next movie?
Clancy stated
in this newsgroup message that Rainbow Six and Without
Remorse were the next movies up and he expects to be seeing
scripts soon.

M8 -- What's the song in HfRO?
What's that song in HfRO? The one that the Russian Sailor
starts to sing after Ramius gives his orders? The one Jonesy
hears? It also shows up in Harpoon when you win from the
Russian side and in "Red Dawn".
Answer by D.C. "Dan" Koh: "It's the official post-1944 Soviet
anthem. It was composed on orders of Stalin (in a competition)
by A. Aleksandrov, and it replaced 'Internationale' as the
official anthem in 1944. From my almost forgotten primary
school Russian, the opening verse starts something like: 'Soyuz
nerushimi respublik svobodnik, splotila neviki Velikaya Rus'.
And translated like "Unbreakable Union of freeborn republics,
Great Russia has wielded forever to stand.' The irony of the
lyrics is of course obvious. IMO 'Internationale' is more
heart-stirring, not so much in the martial sense as was the
Soviet anthem, but as in a pub anthem sense, which is apt
considering its trade-union raison d'etre. To hear 'Internationale'
in a recent movie, watch 'Land and Freedom', a Ken Loach film on
the Spanish Civil War. Bloody good flick that. "
New Answer by our resident KGB plant, Daniel Khaykis: The
"Hymn to the Red October" ("Salyuut otzam, i nashim dedam...")
is the theme song, it is played at the beginning when Ramius is
shown leaving the port. Curiously enough, it's a fake - a VERY
convincing fake, so much that it got me pretty sure it was a
real song. But it was actually written specifically for HfRO.
"Soyuz nerushimiy" is also in the movie, but later on, after
Ramius reads the orders to the crew.
