Tom Clancy FAQ - Newsgroups

As mentioned on the top page, this FAQ was first intended to support the newsgroups alt.books.tom-clancy and alt.fan.tom-clancy.  Newsgroups were one of the original message boards on the Internet.

The alt.books.tom-clancy newsgroup was first started in approximately May, 1994 according to Tim Klevar who reports that he posted the third message in the newsgroup. Tim goes on to say that the first draft of the FAQ was completed by December, 1994 with the first post occurring on or about February 15, 1995. Tim says that the first post he has from Tom Clancy is in November, 1994. Quoting:

First e-mail I have from Clancy is November 1994, regarding engine heat signature on Air Force 1. He stated in an e-mail that the engines were Pratt engines....I told him that, ahem, they were GE engines.....

If you want to know how to access the newsgroups, you have several options.  If you are an AOL subscriber, there is a section in "Internet" which deals with newsgroups.  SuperNews is one of the leading news server providers and has a "How To" page located here.  If your ISP has provided you with a news server address, use that instead of "news.supernews.com" address.

The alt.books.tom-clancy newsgroup has a set of "regulars" who are usually involved in the discussions that you will find.  This group ranges from computer nerds to at least one witch (don't tick her off).  Recently, biographical sketches were submitted by many of the regulars and you can read them here.
